The Need for Women-only Rehab Programs
Up until the last couple of decades, the only type of substance abuse treatment programs that were available took a one-size-fits-all approach to addiction treatment and recovery.
Today they are referred to as the older, more traditional that relied on the older, more conventional therapies and looked like clinics, hospitals, or motels. Not much has changed where they are concerned.
However, the more innovative, alternative facilities answer the needs of every individual rather than treating them like they are all the same.
A Need for Change
Gender-specific programs evolved out of the need to treat addiction issues that the more traditional facilities failed to address. These are the more modern options and now offer substance abuse treatment for women and men.
These are designed like residences and welcome their clients into a comforting, homelike environment complete with many of the amenities that they are used to enjoying in their own homes. As a result, these facilities are much more conducive to long-lasting recovery.
Recognizing the Differences Between Men and Women
NIDA, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, suggests that differences in gender play a critical role in substance abuse treatment. The right substance abuse treatments for women program addresses and even the spiritual levels of substance dependency so that she receives the professional help she needs.
Additionally, this type of program gives females a better chance of overcoming their abuse issues so that when they return home, she will live substance-free for the rest of her life.
Most of the traditional facilities substance abuse treatment for women programs only takes the mental and physical consequences into consideration. All too often, they overlook or neglect the underlying causes of their addiction and cannot determine which program will be the most effective.
They also fail to realize that women become addicted to substances for different reasons than what men do. It follows then that substance abuse treatment for women should be different than programs for men. Some of the common reasons that have emerged for women substance abuse are:
- Sexual abuse
- Childhood abuse
- Domestic abuse
- Other relationship issues that affect the individual psychologically
Although the situation of the individual cannot be changed, they learn to deal with them better without the addictions.
