OxyContin Substance Abuse Treatment
What is Oxycontin?
One of the marketed brand names for Oxycodone HCL is OxyContin, a synthetic opioid analgesic (painkiller) that is produced and distributed by the Purdue Pharma Corporation. Being a codeine-related narcotic as well as a morphine derivative, OxyContin is extremely addictive. Its high potential for addiction has resulted in its growing popularity among recreational users. OxyContin was listed again in the DEA’s annual report as a primary drug threat here in the US.
Additionally, numerous national health organizations and other medical professionals have labeled OxyContin as a public health threat due to the number of reported cases of deaths from overdosing and other serious illnesses that are associated with the use of the drug. As a result, many of the addiction treatment and recovery centers in the US today now offer OxyContin substance abuse treatment programs. However, the bottom line is the fact that there has been a dramatic increase in the recreational use of the drug since it was first introduced to the market in 1995.
Abuse and addiction
Aspirin and paracetamol are typically used with hydrocodone as well as some of its derivatives in order to manufacture synthetic opioids which has tended to limit the potential for these drugs being used recreationally. Unfortunately, the same does not hold true where OxyContin is concerned. It is not a compound like the others and only contains oxycodone, hence its popularity among the recreational audience. The following are considered to be the primary warning signs of an OxyContin addiction being present:
- taking the drug with alcohol or other substances
- taking the drug from an adult’s or a friend’s prescription
- shopping physicians for the purposes of obtaining fraudulent prescriptions
- crushing the medication before injecting or swallowing it
Remember that OxyContin is a powerfully addictive drug and its prolonged use will eventually lead to dependency and addiction. Eventually, it could be fatal.
