Opiate Substance Abuse Treatment

What are opiates?

opiate abuse treatmentAny group of narcotics containing opium or a derivative thereof is classified as opiates. Whether they are natural or synthetic in nature, they will have a hypnotic/sedative effect on the individual taking them, which is the primary reason that they are so popular among those who enjoy recreational substance abuse. The recreational abuse of opiates has led to increasing numbers of addiction throughout the US, the main reason for so many addiction rehab centers now offering opiate substance abuse treatment programs to their clients.

Opiates received their name based on the fact that they are found in opium either as constituents or derivatives of them. Additionally, there are biologically active opioids such as codeine, morphine, papaverine, and thebaine found in opium. The semi-synthetic opioids hydrocodone and oxycodone are derived from these particular substances, especially the more common ones codeine, morphine, and thebaine. Regardless of which opiate is being discussed, they are all powerfully addictive substances.

Opiate dependence

The clinical guidelines put forth by the World Health Organization (WHO) clearly state that is order for an opiate dependency to be present, three or more of the following characteristics must be exhibited or experienced by the affected individual:

  • Despite the harmful potential involved with taking opiates, the individual continues to do so
  • Difficulties in trying to control one’s drug-taking behavior
  • Physiological withdrawal symptoms arising from cessation or stopping the usage of the opiate
  • Progressive neglect of interests or pleasures due to drug use coupled with needing more time to locate the drug and recover from its effects
  • Strong compulsion or desire to keep consuming opiates
  • Tolerance build-up is evident based on the need for taking increasingly higher doses
  • Strong compulsion or desire to consume the opiate in question

Interestingly enough, this definition of “addiction/dependence” came about in 1964, so it is nothing new.
