Methaqualone Substance Abuse Treatment

Methaqualone Substance Abuse TreatmentUnderstanding Methaqualone

Methaqualone is one of the more common sedative-hypnotic medications being sold on the market today. It is a CNS or central nervous system depressant and exhibits side effects similar to those of barbiturates. In the 1960’s and 1970’s, we saw the number of prescriptions for the drug peak as it was the drug that was typically prescribed for treating insomnia. However, the recreational use of methaqualone became popular with different age groups of the day.

Methaqualone was more commonly referred to as Quaaludes (or Sopors) when they first became popular with the recreational crowd. It originated in India which is where it was originally synthesized (1951) and shortly thereafter, was introduced to the Europeans and the Japanese as a safer and more effective substitute for barbiturates. Today, it is still prescribed in these areas and South Africa as well, but not that much in the US anymore.

Side effects of abusing and overdosing on Methaqualone

Despite the fact that Methaqualone is not so widely prescribed here in the US like it once was, addictions and dependencies involving the drug are still considered as being a serous public health threat. Many addiction treatment and recovery centers still provide Methaqualone substance abuse treatment programs. It is very easy for a physical and/or psychological dependency to develop within 2 or 3 weeks. The following are signs to look for when this is the case:

  • decreased heart rate
  • drowsiness and fatigue
  • euphoria and altered states of consciousness
  • increased sexual arousal (aphrodisiac qualities)
  • numbness in the fingers and toes (paresthesias)
  • reduced respiratory rate
  • vomiting

When ingested in higher doses, the side effects can become life-threatening and be fatal for due to convulsing, renal insufficiencies, and falling into a coma that they never come out of.
