MDMA Substance Abuse Treatment
What are MDMA’s?
In layman’s language, an MDMA is known from a legal standpoint as a “club” or “date rape” drug such as Ecstasy or GHG. Its technical name is Methylenedioxymethamphetamine. It is extremely popular as a recreational substance in younger circles, especially at a “rave.” MDMA’s are psychoactive drugs that have become extremely popular during the past decade or so and the recreational use of them is growing in exponentially. As a result of this, the DEA now considers any MDMA as one of the 6 primary drug threats in the US.
Additionally, health organizations and medical professionals consider the drug as being a serious public health threat due to the numerous annually reported cases of serious illnesses associated with chronic use of MDMA’s. Additionally, the reason they are classified as “club” or “date rape” drugs is due to the fact that they are characterized by their ability to create the following feelings:
- diminished feelings of anxiety, depression, and fear (almost empowerment)
- a heightened sense of sexual intimacy
Originally, it was suggested that MDMA’s could have therapeutic applications and certain individuals might benefit in other ways from its use.
Ironically, prior to being classified as a controlled substance, MDMA’s were experimentally used during marital therapy and other psychotherapeutic applications. At one time, it was being prescribed for anxiety disorders and depression. Clinical research is currently being conducted to test their effectiveness for treating anxieties most commonly associated with terminal cancer patients and those suffering with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Based on its popularity among the younger crowd and the fact that increasingly more cases of MDMA abuse are being reported every year, many of the addiction treatment and recovery centers in the US now offer MDMA substance abuse treatment programs. This also true here at the Delray Recovery Center, one of the most successful drug addiction rehab centers here in the country.
