LSD Substance Abuse Treatment
What is LSD?
LSD is a semi-synthetic psychedelic drug that gained significant popularity among recreation users of the mid-1960’s to early 1970’s. The letters stand for Lysergic acid Diethylamide. Ironically, LSD was originally invented by Albert Hoffman (Swiss chemist) in November of 1938. However, it would be nearly 5 years for its psychedelic properties to be discovered. Ironically, the drug was originally introduced to the US in 1949, most researchers and scientists of the day believed that it had positive clinical applications.
Today we recognize and refer to LSD as a hallucinogen along with substances such as Peyote or Psilocybin (“magic mushrooms”). Statistics are speculative at best as to how much of a drug threat LSD is where the DEA is concerned. However, it is still popular among “recreational” drug users and still widely available. As a result, many LSD substance abuse treatment programs are being employed to combat the abuse and dependency that oftentimes results from the chronic, ongoing use of the drug.
Tolerance to LSD
Ironically, LSD is not considered as being an addictive drug. However, individuals can easily build up a tolerance for it, which results in the need to higher doses of the drug in order to achieve the desired high that they are looking for. Since LSD in the body can exceed “safe” levels, building up a tolerance to the drug can be very dangerous and potentially harmful. Additionally, the higher dose that the individual ingests the more unpredictable it becomes where side effects are concerned. It is this unpredictability that makes LSD so dangerous.
Despite the fact that there are no significant withdrawal symptoms associated with LSD abuse, there are physical effects that the individual may experience such as:
- impaired coordination
- nausea and vomiting
- sweating
- tremors and twitching
