Heroin Substance Abuse Treatment
Is heroin still the drug threat that it once was?
Without a doubt, and despite the fact that the popularity of heroin has diminished over the past few decades, the DEA still considers it to be one of the 6 primary drug threats in the US today. The other 5 include:
- cocaine in either crack or powder form
- marijuana
- methamphetamine
- MDMA’s (the club or date rape drugs such as Ecstasy, GHB, etc.)
- prescription medications
In addition to this, the American Society of Addiction Medicine classifies the drugs that are known to create dependency and addiction (illegal, OTC, and prescription drugs) into the following three categories:
- Hypnotics/sedatives – includes substances such as alcohol, barbiturates, and benzodiazepines
- Opiate/opioid analgesics (painkillers) – codeine and morphine, fully-synthetic opioids, and semi-synthetic opiates
- Stimulants – this category is comprised of substances such as amphetamine and/or methamphetamine, caffeine, cocaine, and nicotine
The primary reasons that heroin continues to be considered as one of the primary drug threats in the US is due to its affordability and availability. It is easily accessible on the streets. Additionally, there are still numerous cases of heroin abuse reported every year that results in either death due to overdose or other serious illnesses.
Therefore, it is also viewed as being serious public health threat as well. For many years now, the majority of the addiction treatment and recovery facilities in the US have employed the use of heroin substance abuse treatment programs. Addicted individuals have a place that they can go for treatment and then recover fully so that they can return home to their community to live substance-free lives.
