Overcoming substance abuse
Although an addicted individual made a choice about using alcohol and/or drugs or not using them, they must also make a choice between getting help for substance abuse and not getting help. For most of them, it is the fear of the unknown that is the primary obstacle between overcoming their addiction and continuing to use their substance of choice, the fear of living without that substance.
Substance abuse treatment is comprised of three separate stages:

- aftercare and support
Remember that substance abuse results in two different levels of consequences. Secondly, there are oftentimes the negative financial, legal, and social consequences that they must deal with.

The overall impact of substance abuse
Most addicted individuals will justify their continued substance abuse by claiming that they are only harming themselves by abusing alcohol and/or drugs. However, nothing could be farther from the truth because substance abuse doesn’t just harm the person using it. It tears families apart and destroys all types of relationships in its wake. The bottom line is that substance abuse harms the individual and everyone around them. There is never a positive outcome to abusing alcohol and drugs.
When the individual does finally admit that they have a problem with either alcohol or drugs (or both), the next step is for them to get help for substance abuse by finding a rehab program that will effectively address those needs that are exclusive to them.
