GHB Substance Abuse Treatment
What is a GHB?
GHB is the abbreviation for the Gamma-hydroxybutyrate, a chemical that is most commonly categorized as a depressant and sedative that targets our central nervous system. The chemical naturally occurs in nearly all animals as well as small amounts of beef, our central nervous system, citrus fruits, wine. It is preferred by the younger crowd who frequents the nightlife segment of society commonly. It is oftentimes referred to as a “club” or “date rape” drug according to the DEA.
Ecstasy is also an example of this type of drug because it produces a sense of euphoria and eventually decreased sexual inhibitions. GHB was once classified as a therapeutic drug during its earlier days on the market. However, its current recreational use is growing in exponential numbers. As a result, we have seen the number of GHB substance abuse treatment programs increase in number at many of the addiction treatment and recovery facilities throughout the US.
The illicit use of GHB
The drug is used as an intoxicant because it is a CNS or central nervous system depressant. The effects of GHB are similar to what you would experience when combining alcohol with Ecstasy which includes disinhibition, enhanced sensuality, and euphoria. When consumed in larger doses, GHB exhibits the following side effects:
- agitation
- amnesia
- depressed breathing
- dizziness
- drowsiness
- nausea
- visual disturbances
- unconsciousness
In some cases, an overdose of the drug can be fatal. These side effects can last anywhere from 1½ to 3 hours. Sometimes, they will last even longer when the drug is combined with alcoholic beverages. Athletes have been known to use GHB because it increases the human growth hormone. The drug is extremely common in the professional wrestling and several deaths have been recorded which were indirectly associated with GHB consumption.
