Dexedrine Substance Abuse Treatment

Dexedrine Substance Abuse TreatmentWhat is Dexedrine primarily used for?

Dexedrine is the trademarked brand name for Dextroamphetamine. It is an amphetamine that is classified as a central nervous system stimulant or CNS. Dexedrine was primarily prescribed as a diet supplement during the 1960’s and early 1970’s because one of its primary characteristics was the suppression of one’s appetite. Dexedrine works by suppressing the individual’s spontaneous behavior and displays an increase in the following:

  • socializing
  • obsessive-compulsive behavior
  • curiosity and exploration

Dependency on the drug increases in conjunction with the build up of tolerance. This means that the individual needs to take higher and higher doses of the drug in order to achieve the desired effect or high that Dexedrine provides. As a result, there are numerous addiction treatment and recovery centers that provide Dexedrine Substance abuse treatment programs throughout the US today.

Abuse and dependency warning signs

The side effects of Dexedrine dependency are classified into physiological, psychological, and withdrawal symptoms categories:

Physical side effects – the milder side effects include dry mouth, flushing, grinding teeth or Bruxism, headaches, hyperactivity, pupil dilation, and restlessness. The more serious side effects include coma, myocardial infarction, and seizures. Additionally, Dexedrine overdose can sometimes be fatal although this is rare.

Psychological side effects – the psychological side effects usually include aggressive behavior, anxiety and panic disorders, euphoria (the “high”), increased feelings of power and invincibility, increased libido (sexual drive), obsessive or repetitive behavior, paranoia, and psychosis.

Withdrawal symptoms – there are three primary withdrawal symptoms. Depending on the severity of the addiction, these can last for days at a time. These include mental fatigue, increased appetite, and depression.

These side effects are clear indicators that a Dexedrine dependency exists. If you or a loved one is experiencing any of these, you should seek the help of an addiction specialist as soon as you can before it is too late.
