Demerol Substance Abuse Treatment
What is Demerol and why is it prescribed?
Demerol is an opioid-based painkiller or analgesic that is fast-acting in nature and is used to treat moderate to severe pain. Demerol use became popular because it carries less risk of addiction and is safer to use than morphine or other opioid based medication. As with any other opioid-based painkiller, dependency is a critical issue with Demerol and it should never be taken in larger doses than what is prescribed. Unfortunately, Demerol is extremely popular with recreational drug users and dependencies tend to build up rapidly.
Demerol addiction warning signs
Whenever Demerol addiction is present, the key indicators of this are the more common withdrawal symptoms that are present when the dependency has developed. These signs include the following:
- stomach cramps
- runny nose
- restlessness and tremors
- nausea
- insomnia
- flu-like symptoms
- diarrhea
- bone and muscle pain
- anxiety
- agitation
The obsession or preoccupation of obtaining more Demerol and consuming higher and higher doses of it is another indicator that a dependency is present.
Needless to say, the recreational use of the drug is extremely dangerous because tolerance builds up quickly and overdoses are not uncommon when trying to achieve the desired high that the drug produces. Every year, there are thousands of cases involving death due to overdose and serious illnesses that are directly related to Demerol abuse. As a result, it is now considered to be a serious public health threat and many addiction rehab facilities throughout the US now offer Demerol substance abuse treatment programs.
