Center for Substance Abuse Treatment
What is substance abuse?
Substance abuse is oftentimes referred to as drug abuse although the use of the term “drug” does not imply alcohol like “substance” does. Any substance abuse is a type of maladaptive behavior pattern of alcohol or drug use that is different from addiction or dependency. However, it does not exclude dependency even though people make the mistake of interchanging these terminologies in error. The bottom line is that substance abuse, if not treated professionally could become a life-threatening issue.
Substance abuse is a condition that is defined by the specific behavior patterns that an individual exhibits for a period of at least one year which includes at least one if not more of the following characteristics:
- they take part in dangerous and/or reckless activities such as driving a vehicle or operating heavy equipment when they have been using their substance of choice
- they are having financial, legal, and social issues
- they continue to use the substance despite the negative effect that it has on family, friends, loved ones, and other relationships in their lives
- their performance at school or on the job suffers because of their drug use
A center for substance abuse treatment that offers long-term in-patient programs is rated as the most effective type of rehab facility to enter in order to address this issue. One that utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy and medication is typically the most effective as well and exhibits the highest recovery success rate overall. There are also out-patient programs, but these are discouraged against because they allow their clients to return home to their potentially harmful environment unlike the in-patient format.
A brief overview of drug abuse treatment and its intent
A center for substance abuse treatment is oftentimes referred to as a rehab center for abuse, addiction, and dependency. Substance abuse treatment involves a specific type of medical and/or psychotherapeutic processes that are utilized for treating abuse, addiction, or the dependency on psychoactive substances inclusive of:
- alcohol
- prescription medications
- “street” drugs
Street drugs refer to a number of powerfully addictive substances that are sold illegally such as amphetamines, cocaine, or heroin. The specific intent of the center for substance abuse treatment is to help the individual stop using drugs and remain substance-free for life.
