Benzodiazepine Substance Abuse Treatment

Benzodiazepine Substance Abuse TreatmentWhat are benzodiazepines?

Benzodiazepines or “benzos” as they are oftentimes called are categorized as psychoactive drugs and are commonly classified as tranquilizers. They are used to treat anxiety, insomnia, and panic attacks. Unfortunately, they are readily accessible out on the street for the recreational drug user. As a result, we are seeing more cases of benzodiazepine abuse and addiction and many addiction treatment and recovery centers have had to implement Benzodiazepine substance abuse treatment programs.

The drug has gained the attention of the DEA and is now one of the primary drug threats in the US that the organization is concerned with along with numerous other prescription medications that are being illegally distributed on the streets. Additionally, we are seeing a high number of cases involving serious illnesses that are directly related to benzodiazepine abuse and addiction. So these drugs are now viewed as serious public health threats as well according to numerous health organizations and medical professionals.

Benzodiazepine addiction

Addiction to these drugs occurs when an individual becomes dependent on them and can’t function during the day without taking them. The dependence on Benzodiazepines can be both physical and psychological (behavioral) in nature. Addiction includes the misuse or recreational abuse of the drug to enjoy its euphoric effects, not to counteract any withdrawal symptoms that may be present. Addiction also results when an individual has been taking them as prescribed by their physician and are unable to stop taking them.

Signs and symptoms

The more common symptoms that an individual tends to experience when they are taking benzodiazepines include:

  • failure to cut down the dosage of the drug or stopping use altogether
  • inability to cope and function without the drug
  • tolerance to effects of the drug
  • withdrawal symptoms resulting from cessation of intake

Other withdrawal symptoms that may exist include anxiety, depression, headaches, muscle aches, sleep disturbance, and tremors.
