Sober Living Homes

The purpose of sober living homes

sober living houseSober living homes are also referred to as halfway houses and provide a place of residence for recovering alcohol or drug addicts who are transitioning between an addiction rehab program and society. In addition to providing the person with a place to live during this transition period, they are also living with individuals just like them who need the additional support that sober living homes provide. Support typically comes in the form of evening group therapy sessions so that they can conduct their lives normally during the day.

The concept of sober living homes was born on the west coast of the US and eventually spread throughout the country. You can now find these types of residences in every state in the country whether they are affiliated with a specific addiction treatment and recovery center or not. However, as this type of residency is a relatively newer part of the addiction treatment and recovery process, there are no concrete statistics available to indicate how successful they are at helping the individual through the recovery process.

Reaching a wider audience

Interestingly enough, the concept of sober living homes reached a wider audience when the TV series “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew” began airing on the VH-1 cable network in 2008. In fact, it was the 8th episode of the series that discussed sober living homes extensively. A spin-off of Celebrity Rehab known as “Sober House” took the concept even further and documented the individuals that entered these sober living environments. The VH-1 network described sober living homes as:

“. . . an interim step on the path to sobriety where addicts can live in a supervised and sober environment with structure and rules . . .”

These rules included adhering to curfews, doing household chores, and participating in therapeutic meetings for support purposes. Another important aspect to realize where sober living homes are concerned is the fact that no two of them are ever alike and will impose different rules based on the individuals staying in residency there.

Transitioning from rehab with the Delray Recovery Center

We offer a sober living homes program here at the Delray Recovery Center so that you can stay in residency as long as you feel is necessary while recovering from your addiction. Once you have completed one of our in-patient addiction treatment and recovery programs, you can enter the sober living program for further support and to gain confidence in yourself so that you don’t fear relapsing when you return home to your community.
