Sober Living for Women
Addiction differs between men and women
The failure of many addiction treatment and recovery programs today stems from the fact that they treat all addictions the same whether it is a man or woman that has a substance abuse problem with alcohol or drugs. Many facilities are the traditional type that rely on conventional therapies and take a one-size-fits-all approach to treating the issue. However, the failure of these programs lies in the differences of gender rather than the substance they are abusing or addicted to.
At some point in time, nearly every man or woman will experiment with some type of addictive substance, whether it is alcohol or drugs. Alcoholism and drug addiction long been considered a problem among men, yet over 200,000 die every year from these addictions and there are over 4 million women that are currently in need of help. Today, it is very apparent that there are differences in the causes of addiction for men compared to women.
For instance, women that have experienced certain trauma in their lives whether parental, sexual, or spousal are more likely to succumb to an alcohol or drug addiction while this is a rare occurrence with men. Granted, a long history of alcohol or drug dependency in prior generations is oftentimes a reason to believe that the individual will eventually exhibit addictive behavior and begin abusing one of these substances. However, this is not always the case where differentiating the causes between male and female addictive behavior.
Sober living for women programs
Just as there are sober living programs for men, there are similar programs for women. More and more women enter the work force and raise children as a single parent, so it is no wonder that sober living for women programs are in existence today. The sober living concept originated on the west coast of the US several decades ago, but they are now found throughout every state in the country. Sober living for women programs have evolved in importance to the point that they are now equal in number to those for men.
