Painkiller Rehab

Painkiller RehabMany painkiller abusers come to their senses that they need rehabilitation from their addiction only after experiencing a life threatening situation like an overdose of pills. Unless this happens, nobody can force a painkiller dependent to turn himself or herself into a painkiller rehab for treatment.

Painkiller rehabs usually have in care and out care programs. In care programs gives an option for the drug dependent to stay at a given period of time for him or her to recover fully inside the facility depending on the severity of the addiction. The out care program however ensures the recovering drug dependent to continue the full recovery outside the facility by using the resource to help him or her to stay on track.

Painkillers are drugs used to alleviate pain but these drugs can also be very addictive especially narcotics which includes codeine and morphine. Addiction to painkillers starts out when painkillers are taken for longer periods of time instead of the prescribed number of days or weeks by the physician. Because of the prolonged use of the drug, the body become tolerant and adjusts the normal bodily operations with the level of painkillers present in the system. The neuro-functions of the brain are reprogrammed as the body adjusts. The user would then need a higher dose than before making them addicted to painkillers in a full-blown state. If the level of painkiller is reduced or stopped altogether, withdrawal symptoms usually occur which are intensely unpleasant such as restlessness, insomnia, nervousness, involuntary muscle movement, muscle pains, nausea and vomiting.

Painkiller rehab usually offers treatment methods which has two categories:

  • The behavioral method
  • The pharmacological method

The behavioral method teaches drug dependents that life can be lived without the use of prescription drugs. They also learn how to cope with the desire that may recur during and after the treatment program and how to handle these situations if that desire resurfaces. This is usually done through counseling sessions both done individually and as a group by professional counselors and psychotherapist trained in this field. The recovering addict is also educated on how to improve and restore broken relationships with their family, friends and community. begins with detoxification which gradually reduces the dose of painkillers being taken by the dependent until it can be avoided altogether.

The pharmacological method on the other hand uses prescription drugs to alleviate the effects of the addictive painkillers on the brain and the behavior of the individual undergoing treatment including the side effects and withdrawal symptoms that usually occur during the detoxification process.

On a final note, the simultaneous use of both the behavioral and pharmacological methods by trained medical professionals in the treatment of prescription drug addiction could immensely bring about faster recovery and healing for drug dependents without the fear of side effects.
