Mental Illness

Mental Illness refers to a state of disorder in one’s life characterized by disturbances in his or her thoughts, emotions or behavior. In general terms, Mental Illness includes all forms of disorder ranging from those causing minor distress to severe ones that totally impairs a person’s ability to function well.

Mental Illness is also known as “insanity” and “psychiatric disorders’.

It is indeed a common phenomenon in almost all nations of the world to see many people who are mentally sick especially on the road sides and remote areas. In the US for example, it is on record that about 24% of people in the 18 years category experience various forms of mental illness.

The 24 Percent

This 24 percent, amounts to about 44 million adults living in the US. The story is also the same in most countries in Europe, Asia and Australia. The African countries also have a major part in this as there are many Africans who are also mentally deranged.

Mental Illness can take several forms such as schizophrenia which is a severe psychiatric disorder in which a person is emotionally disturbed. Such a person withdraws from the public and begins to live alone in his or her small world.

Mental Illness can also be in the forms of:

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Psychotic disorders
  • Personality disorders
  • Mood disorders
  • Impulse control disorders
  • Eating disorders
  • and so many other forms

All these disorders do not just happen; there are some remote factors or causes involved.

Causes of Mental Illness

Mental illness could be as a result of several causes or factors such as:

  • Biological factors
  • Behavioral factors
  • Socio-cultural factors
  • and some minor other factors

Biological factors

Biologically, there are various cases of Mental Illness that have their roots in the genetic make-up of various families involved. Such a trait is usually observed in the family tree of the individual involved and it re-surfaces in every generation.

Behavioral Factors

Behavioral factors such as the drinking and eating habits of an individual can also lead to mental illness of various kinds. Drug abuse and chronic cases of addiction if not properly handled leads to various cases of mental illness.

Social-Culture Factors

Again, social-cultural factors such as poverty, sudden loss of a lucrative job, unemployment, wars and genocide cases are capable of leading someone into one form of mental illness or the order. 


Like every other ugly case, Mental Illness could also be treated and controlled. There are various approaches used in treating various cases of mental illness.

These include:

  • Drug therapy
  • Individual therapy
  • Group and family therapy
  • Electroconvulsive therapy
  • and some other treatments methods

Generally, mentally sick persons are usually taken to psychiatric rehab homes where they are first of all diagnosed and then treated with the appropriate method. In all, Mental Illness is very dreadful. The conditions can make a man or woman very useless in life. Nevertheless, it could be controlled and treated although in most cases, the treatment period may extend into years.
