Florida Eating Disorder Treatment

What is an eating disorder?

Florida Eating Disorder TreatmentAny groups of conditions wherein abnormal eating habits are the primary characteristics are most commonly referred to as eating disorders.  This includes the excessive or insufficient intake of food and is typically detrimental to the individual on both the physiological and psychological levels.  The most common eating disorders include:

  • anorexia nervosa (the most common eating disorder)
  • bulimia nervosa
  • binge eating disorders

These eating disorders are far more common in females than males in that there are an estimated 5 to 10 million women in the US suffering from this condition today compared to only 1 million men.

Although this is a condition that is becoming quite noticeable on a global basis, females in the western world display the highest risk of developing an eating disorder.  Additionally, the degree to which “westernization” progresses increases that risk factor even more.  As a result, there are now numerous Florida eating disorder treatment programs available today.

Risk factors regarding eating disorders

Binge-eating disorders affect men and women alike as does anorexia or bulimia nervosa.  The key difference is that binge eaters are prone to episodes where their eating is out of control and they do not do the purging of calories that the other two groups of individuals typically do.  However, no matter what the eating disorder is, there are numerous risk factors involved where both men and women are concerned.  These risk factors apply to:

  • someone who continually goes on diets
  • someone who continually seeks out social approval
  • someone who has experienced an earlier than normal level of physical development
  • someone who has a high level of difficulty when it comes to asserting their needs
  • someone who is a perfectionist
  • someone who was abused sexually
  • someone who was obese or overweight as a child
  • someone whose family history has shown a high incidence of substance abuse
  • someone with an excessive need to be in control
  • someone with impulse control issues (inability to control their impulses)
  • women who live in cultures that is traditionally masculine
