An overview of drug addiction
Drug addiction is also referred to more technically as substance dependence. It is the obsessive and uncontrollable use of drugs regardless of the problems that could result from this abuse. Drug addiction can be diagnosed with or without physiological dependency as well as any evidence of tolerance or withdrawal that may exist. Just like alcoholism, drug addiction is looked upon as a treatable disease or disorder. Therefore, it can be treated.
Today, the DEA classifies the causes of drug addiction based on the category of substance. There are three distinct categories of drugs that typically lead to dependency and addiction:
- Hypnotics or sedatives – alcohol, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and other hypnotics or sedatives
- Opiates and/or opioid-based analgesics (painkillers) – codeine, heroin, fentanyl, methadone, and oxycodone
- Stimulants – amphetamine or methamphetamine and cocaine
Additionally, the DEA now considers the primary drug threats in the US to be the following based on how widely they are distributed and trafficked throughout the country:
- cocaine in crack or powder form
- heroin
- marijuana
- MDMA’s such as Ecstasy, a.k.a. either “club” or “date rape” drugs
- methamphetamine
- prescription medications that are bought and sold illegally
In addition to the DEA’s findings and reports, numerous health organizations and medical professionals consider the above substances as being serious public health threats. This is due to the fact that there are some 40 million reported cases of death due to overdose and serious illnesses that are associated with substance dependency.
The drug treatment clinic arose out of necessity
Just as many facilities were developed in order to treat alcoholism and help the alcoholic recover from it, so too was the case with the drug treatment clinic. This type of addiction treatment and recovery facility has evolved into two distinct categories – the traditional format and the alternative or residential format. The latter of the two has proven to be the more viable option based on higher recovery success rates, operational format, and overall appearance of the facility.
