The concept of alcoholism and addiction as an illness or disease has only existed since the year 1950s. Coinciding directly with the twelve-step recovery program known as AA or Alcoholics Anonymous, this new concept of treatment centers took some time before it could be accepted widely. At present, many drug treatment centers have based their programs on this twelve-step recovery program and methodologies offering safe and supportive environment conducive to healing and recovery.

Drug treatment works by ending physical dependency to substances which characterizes drug addiction. It’s not only a physical disease but a psychological one as well in all its dimensions. Emotional as well as physiological health of the drug and substance dependent should be carefully considered and addressed with particular emphasis on educating them with coping skills in order to rebuild their will power and self esteem destroyed by their addiction. It is moreover a process of personal discovery and personal growth for long term healing and recovery.
Drug treatment is not easy but bearing in mind that the battle can be won by joining forces and equipping with information, everything can be resolved to the benefit of the people concerned and greatly affected by this debilitating disease. This is the reason why local support groups play a major role in this as they bridge the gap between intense Drug Treatment Center programs and independent sober living arrangements. Continuing care and support can make a big difference.
