Flunitrazipam is most commonly marketed under the brand name Rohypnol, which is a benzodiazepine-based medication produced by the pharmaceutical division of Roche or F. Hoffmann–La Roche Ltd. It is characterized as an amnesic, anticonvulsant, anxiolytic, hypnotic, sedative, and skeletal muscle relaxant. These are the five most common and intrinsic characteristics of the benzodiazepine family of drugs.
Ironically, Rohypnol is not legally available in the US today, even though it is classified as a Schedule III controlled substance. Interestingly enough, the DEA is recommending that Rohypnol should be reclassified as a Schedule I controlled substance. The drug is normally prescribed for treating acute insomnia due to its hypnotic side effects.
