Mescaline Drug Rehab

mescalineMescaline is a psychedelic substance that occurs naturally in the peyote cactus of Mexico.  It became popular in the 1960’s with the hippy crowd as an alternative to the more harmful potential of LSD.  However, it is well documented that Native America has been using it for centuries, mostly for religious purposes.  The mescaline mechanism works in similar fashion to that of LSD.  It is a psychotropic drug capable of producing altered states of consciousness and numerous hallucinations.

To ingest mescaline, the button of the peyote cactus is ground into a powder that is mixed in a liquid and then the individual drinks it.  It is also the active ingredient of this dark brown powder that typically creates a clouding of the mind and some other mind-boggling effects.  In recent years, using mescaline recreationally has become a popular endeavor and many addiction treatment and recovery centers are now offering mescaline drug rehab programs as a result.

Side effects

In some instances, the ongoing recreational use of the drug can lead to addiction, but because no two experiences are alike one another when mescaline is ingested, it is typically viewed as not being an addictive substance.  Despite this fact, there are many addiction treatment and recovery centers that have started offering mescaline drug rehab programs to help these individuals stop using it.  The more common side effects of using mescaline include the following:

  • anxiety and sometimes panic attacks
  • creative visuals viewed behind closed eyes
  • dizziness and fainting
  • dream-like states
  • euphoric feelings
  • fear of not being able  to restore normal consciousness
  • feelings of annihilation or even death
  • hallucinogen persisting perception disorder (HPPD)
  • irrational thought processes
  • irregular heartbeat (tachycardia)
  • magical or mystical experiences
  • new and unfamiliar processes of thought
  • the temporary destruction of or splitting up of one’s ego

In addition to the common side effects listed above, there are also mental and physical side effects that occur as well.  The mental effects include disorganized thinking, impairment of perception and sensation, loss of a sense of time, and reactions that are psychotic in nature.  Dilation of the pupils, heavy perspiration and sweating, increased levels of blood sugar, increased body temperature, and nausea are the more common physical side effects of taking mescaline.
