Hallucinogenic Drug Rehab
Drug Rehab for Hallucinogens
When you first gain an awareness that you or somebody that you love may have a problem with hallucinogenic drug use, it can be quite a confusing and frustrating time. There is often a lot of misunderstanding about hallucinogenic drugs since they might not be generally thought of when you think of problem drug use. Maybe you think of drugs like cocaine or heroin when you think of drug problems, but hallucinogens can be just as dangerous, and just as deadly. Hallucinogen use can certainly become a very serious problem, one that can end up threatening your life or the lives of those that you love.
Types of Hallucinogens
Hallucinogens include many different drugs and substances. Some of these are man-made drugs or substances, and some are highly dangerous naturally occurring substances that can be found growing in the wild. Hallucinogens can include many things, with the following being some of the most often used today:
- LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide): LSD may be used in multiple forms including tablets, absorbent papers, or even occasionally in liquid. An LSD experience, which drug users often call “trips” generally does not last for longer than around 12 hours. Users may only engage in trips when they are away from home or when alone, so friends and family may be surprised when they learn a loved one has been using LSD.
- Psilocybin (mushrooms): This substance is found in a specific type of mushroom. When ingested, it can bring on effects that are similar to LSD trip, but are not as long lasting. Typically the effects of ingesting this type of mushrooms will last for around six hours, although some users might ingest them continually to achieve a longer high.
- Mescaline (peyote): This hallucinogen comes from the crown of the peyote cactus. The small round “buttons” are cut off the top of the cactus and dried. Users will generally chew the buttons or soak them in liquid and drink the resulting juice. The high will last for around 12 hours.
- Phencylidine (PCP): PCP is a white powder that can be found in a multitude of forms, including capsules, tablets, or colored powder. Users might swallow, snort, or smoke PCP. In many cases, users will place a dusting of PCP within a marijuana joint, mixing the drugs. PCP can have effects on the users for around six hours, but it can be much longer or much shorter depending on how much has been used.
High dosages of any of these hallucinogens can have very grave consequences that include rupturing of blood vessels in the brain, seizures, brain damage, breathing problems, and heart problems. This means that use of these hallucinogenic substances and drugs, especially in high doses or over an extended period of time, can end up being fatal.
