Drug Addiction

Drugs are the curse of modern science and medicine. Many lives have been destroyed due to the excessive consumption of drugs.

Early on, society looked at people who consumed drugs as weak and without morals. It is these views that shaped the responses to the abuse of drugs. However, with the advancements in science and technology, we now know that drug abuse is a disease that can affect just about anybody, irrespective of class or age. Drug abuse is now treated as a health problem rather than a moral failing.

Scientific and technological advancements have shown that the drugs affect both the brain and the individual’s behavior. Drugs contain several mood altering substances that can cause an individual to fluctuate between various moods. In the worst case scenario, it may cause the individual to behave very violently.

Drug addiction must be treated as quickly as possible. Else it may be too late for the individual. There are several side effects that one can invite by consuming drugs. Drug abuse also opens the doors to legal consequences.

Some of the drugs that are abused are:

  • Methamphetamine – This is a psycho-stimulant drug. It causes the brain to release the chemicals dopamine and nor-epinephrine. This drug has several medical uses. But it also has the potential to make individuals dependent on it. This drug is known by many names: ice, crystal meth, glass, speed and crank. This drug has a wide range of effects:
    • Physical effects – Anorexia, hyperactivity, headache, constipation, blurred vision and dizziness. With heavy dosages, heart attack, stroke or even death can occur.
    • Psychological effects – Euphoria, irritability, anxiety and excessive feelings of superiority and power. With heavy dosages, amphetamine psychosis can take place.
  • Heroin – It is a semi-synthetic drug that is synthesized from morphine. It is used as a pain killer as well as a recreational drug. However, there exists a very high potential for its abuse. The regular and frequent use of this drug results in severe physical and psychological dependence. This later on develops in to a drug addiction. Some of the effects of heroin are disorientation, drowsiness, physical and psychological dependence, euphoria, shallow breathing, vomiting, constipation and itching.
  • Cocaine – This drug is extracted from the leaves of the coca plant. It stimulates the central nervous system of the body and suppresses the appetite. The use of cocaine for non-governmental and non-medicinal purposes is illegal in all parts of the world. Cocaine can be consumed through several ways: orally, injections, insufflations or inhaling.

In addition to these three, there are several other drugs that are consumed around the world. These include party drugs like ecstasy and even prescription drugs.
