Detox Treatment

The types of detox treatment

Detox TreatmentIn the field of addiction treatment and recovery, the first stage that an individual will undergo after entering the alcohol or drug rehab center is usually detox treatment. The detox stage must be completed before you progress to the ensuing stages of recovery, namely counseling (group and individual sessions) and aftercare (support groups). It is, unfortunately, the most difficult part of the entire rehab process and the withdrawal symptoms encountered during this stage can be extremely painful and unpleasant.

There are basically two types of detox treatment that are commonly employed by these different addiction treatment and recovery centers. On the one hand, there is the natural detox treatment which, as the name implies is a natural, non-medical form of detox. The other side of the coin is the medical detox. Both types of detox have their niche in the field of addiction treatment and recovery. In most cases, the decision to detox with or without medications is a matter of personal preference.

Understanding the difference in detox treatments

In many instances, you will find medical detox treatment in many of the addiction treatment and recovery centers throughout the US. Medical detox involves the use of specific medications to ease an individuals discomfort while they are undergoing this stage of the rehab process. The type of medication that is administered is usually determined by the substance the person is addicted to or dependent on. For instance, Acamprosate is used in alcohol detox while Buprenorphine is used in opiate and opioid detox.

The primary benefit of medical detox is that you are cared for, monitored, and supervised around the clock by a licensed medical professional to ensure your comfort and safety while undergoing the detox process. Your progress is monitored regularly and you are supervised in the hopes of not caving in to your intense cravings and relapsing. Relapsing does happen even when you have completed the detox process and have abstained from drinking or using drugs.

Natural detox is most commonly found in the more alternative addiction treatment and recovery programs such as Holistic addiction treatment and recovery programs. This school of thought claims that medical detox is merely a substitution of one addiction for another. Natural detox employs the use of activity and program therapies, exercise, and nutritional counseling in conjunction with a regimen of supplements and vitamins. Surprisingly, this type of detox can be just as successful as medical detox treatment.
