Detox from Suboxone

What is Suboxone?

Detox from SuboxoneThe brand name for the compound comprised of Buprenorphine and Naloxone is Suboxone, a narcotic drug administered for treating opiate and opioid addiction and dependency. It is a 4 to 1 ratio of Buprenorphine to Naloxone and was only available by prescription until it became a popular favorite of recreational drug users. According to the DEA, Suboxone is now one of the prescription medications that is listed with others as a primary drug threat in the US today.

Additionally, public health officials and medical professionals consider Suboxone addiction or dependency as a serious public health threat even though it is commonly prescribed for the opiate addiction treatment with drugs such as codeine, heroin, and morphine. It is also prescribed for treating moderate pain for individuals who are non-opioid tolerant and who can easily become dependent on synthetic opioid painkillers (analgesics). As a result of its recreational abuse, many rehab centers now offer detox from Suboxone programs.

Even individuals take Suboxone as prescribed by their physician, tolerances build up almost unnoticed and they can still become addicted to or dependent upon the drug. The addiction or dependency becomes obvious once the individual cannot function during the day without using the drug. Once this is apparent, the individual may be a candidate for a detox from Suboxone program. Additionally, a 1990’s Harvard study showed that Suboxone was an optional treatment for depression.

Why is Suboxone addictive?

Buprenorphine is one of the components of Suboxone and is known as a “partial” opiate agonist. It works just like other opiates or opioids do on the brain’s opiate receptors. Even though it is described as being a low-powered opiate itself, Suboxone is still an addictive drug. Due to the fact that Suboxone contains Buprenorphine, it is just as addictive as all of the other opiates and opioids out there. When an individual takes Suboxone to treat opiate and opioid addiction, they may be replacing one dependency with another one.

Treatment for Suboxone addiction or dependency

Whenever an individual reaches the point where they cannot function throughout the day without using Suboxone, it is time to consider getting the professional help of a detox from Suboxone program. There are typically three stages involved in the treatment and recovery process – detox and withdrawal, group and individual counseling, and the aftercare/support stages. The detox and withdrawal stage is without a doubt the most difficult and unpleasant stage to deal with but it is also the most critical of the three.
