What are detox centers?
Detox is the shortened form of the terminology detoxification which is the removal of substance toxins from a person’s body along with any of its residues. It is typically the first step in the addiction treatment and recovery and recovery process. Individuals who are suffering with substance abuse, addiction, and dependency issue will enter one of the many detox centers throughout the US in order to get help for their substance related issues. Detox is also the first step taken on the road to recovering from these issues.
Detox centers attempt to reduce the discomfort and unpleasantness that results from the physical withdrawal symptoms of alcohol and drug dependency, oftentimes prescribing certain medications to aid in the detox process. Additionally, detox centers are typically found in the residential, in-patient addiction treatment and recovery facilities and carefully monitors an individual’s progress while supervising them and caring for their needs. This is done in order to protect the person from further harm and see that they comfortable.
When you continually abuse substances, become addicted to them, or are dependent on them, it changes the chemical functions of the brain. The more severe the addiction becomes, the more the body’s ability to produce certain chemical processes is decreased. If you are dependent on alcohol or some other addictive drug and you suddenly stop drinking or taking the drug, your body undergoes withdrawal symptoms that can be severe. This includes grand mal seizures, hallucinations, tremors and even heart attacks.
The importance of substance detox
Depending on the metabolic rate of the individual, detox can last up to 14 days while the withdrawal symptoms that typically occur will peak within the first 3 or 4 days. Despite the unpleasantness that the individuals will experience in the detox centers, this stage is the critical first step in the addiction treatment and recovery process the following reasons:
- If there are toxins remaining in the individual’s body, cravings for the substance will not stop and become a roadblock to this stage of the addiction treatment and recovery process
- The individual is unable to engage in any future treatment and recovery steps or any aftercare and support because detox actually prepares the individual for this
When a person’s addiction or dependency has become severe enough, certain medications may have to be prescribed by these detox centers in order to assist in the process.
