Depression

DepressionGenerally, the term ‘depression’ refers to a mental condition in which an individual experiences deep anger and anxiety which might be as a result of an unpleasant situation. It is also a psychiatric disorder that makes a person to be worried and troubled all the time. In psychology, the term is usually a very serious issue as it affects the general well being of the person suffering from it.

The Symptoms

Depression is usually a common phenomenon in our world today. Many people who are suffering from this usually exhibit certain notable signs such as: feelings of hopelessness, dejection, lack of drive, insomnia, lack of concentration and so on.

Generally, people who are depressed find it very difficult to eat well and sleep well. At night, they keep on worrying and gazing at the ceiling while lying on their beds. The energy level in such individuals is normally at its lowest ebb at such depressed moment. Many times such depressed people also have poor self images.

In certain cases, there are psychotic symptoms in the lives of depressed persons. Such symptoms include: delusions, hallucinations, moodiness and even suicidal attempts.

Causes of Depression

Depression generally could be as a result of certain factors namely: biological factors, psychological factors and stressful events.

Biological factors causing depression is said to be a family trait. Many people who suffer from constant depressed state are said to have such habit from their family tree. This is usually evident in a family whereby the children react to certain ugly events in the exact way their parents do. When they eventually grow up, the attitude continues with them.

Psychological factors that cause depression refer mainly to the way people behave and think in the face of certain ugly situations. Depressed person are usually known for the negative way of thinking and comments.

Again, stressful events such as the death of a loved one or motor accident can cause deep seated depression in the life of an individual. Such events are the main factors usually seen in the life of many people suffering from depression.

Depression Treatment

Depression can always be handled when proper steps are taken. Currently there are two major ways bused in treating depressed persons. The two methods include: the use of antidepressant drugs and psychotherapy.

Antidepressant drugs refer to such effective drugs obtainable in various rehab homes and hospitals used in arresting acute depression in human lives. However, the drugs normally have side effects depending on the response and body reaction of the individual involved.

On the other hand, psychotherapeutic method is indeed the best way used in handling various cases of depression. It involves the participation of a good medical professional who is also a psychotherapist. In psychotherapy, proper verbal communication and counseling approaches are engaged in helping the depressed person.

In conclusion, depression is a common phenomenon in our world today. Nevertheless, the good news is that you can overcome it always by taking cognizance of the various treatment options involved in it.
