Treatment for Alcoholism

The alcoholism problem in the US

Treatment for AlcoholismOver 18 million Americans suffer everyday with some form of alcoholism whether it is abuse, addiction, or dependency. At least 40% of them need treatment for alcoholism immediately but only 10% at best will get the professional help they need. The following are some additional statistics regarding alcoholism that you should be aware of:

  • Excessive alcohol consumption is responsible for over 100,000 deaths every year
  • Roughly 50% of all fatal vehicle accidents are associated with drinking alcohol
  • The average American drinks over 2 gallons of alcohol every year (naturally there are those who drink more than that while there are others who drink less and some others do not drink at all)
  • A person is less likely to drink when they are a more educated individual
  • More money equates to more drinking. In other words, the wealthier an individual is, the greater the likelihood of them drinking.
  • The US has only the 26th highest per capita alcohol consumption. Amazingly, the tiny country of Luxembourg is #1 on that list while #2 is Hungary, #3 is Ireland, #4 is the Czech Republic, and #5 is Germany. Obviously, alcoholism is a global problem.
  • Everyday, nearly 12,000 teenagers try alcohol the first time.
  • It is estimated that the annual cost of alcoholism here in the US is between 40 and 60 billion dollars.

Although a common misconception in this country is that only the uneducated and the poor are responsible for the majority of the alcoholism in the US, the above facts and statistics regarding the subject prove otherwise.

Getting the right help for alcoholism

Treatment for AlcoholismThe first thing you have to remember regarding alcoholism is that, from a medical standpoint, it is viewed as a treatable disease, or more specifically a neurological disorder. Today there are thousands of addiction rehab centers throughout the US that offer treatment for alcoholism programs. So the individual with alcohol addiction issues will be challenged to find a facility where they can get the right help that addresses their unique personal and clinical needs.

Since alcoholism is considered as being a “dual disease” based on containing physiological and psychological characteristics or components, it must be treated as such. Alcoholism’s biological mechanism has not clearly been defined. However, factors such as age, ethnic group, gender, family history, mental health, the social environment, and stress are all viewed as contributing influences in the development of alcoholism. All of these must be taken into consideration where treatment for alcoholism is concerned.
