Alcohol Dependency

People who become alcoholics typically do not begin with the intention of letting alcohol consumption rule their lives. They often set out to escape stress, ease pain or fit in with the crowd. But regular use can develop into alcohol dependency and quickly take over the abuser’s life. The Delray Recovery Center understands the heartbreak and pain involved in watching a loved one’s life fall apart due to alcohol addiction. We can help your loved one overcome alcohol dependency, and one of our intake counselors can assist you in starting the process of seeking help for an alcoholic partner or child. Our staff can also provide you with information on how alcohol dependency develops and what Delray Recovery Center can do to help.

Alcohol Dependency

  • Neuroadaptation: The Brain Chemicals Change. The limbic system is the part of the brain where emotion and motivation are developed and supported. Neuroadaptation is the process by which the brain’s chemicals change to adapt to altered conditions. These neurotransmitters react to increased drinking by releasing messages of anxiety and distress when the levels of alcohol in the body decrease, and the only way the addict feels he or she can relieve these feelings of discomfort is to drink again.
  • The Brain’s Reward Center Changes. As alcohol dependence continues to grow, the neurotransmitters slowly change from being involved in the brain’s reward center to those in charge of negative feelings and emotions. Rather than releasing emotions such as pride, joy and happiness, these neurotransmitters begin to release negative emotions and feelings associated with alcohol withdrawal symptoms, such as anxiety.

Delray Recovery Center Can Help

  • Entering the Recovery Program. Upon entering the Delray Recovery Center, your loved one will meet with an intake counselor to talk about his or her alcohol abuse. Through this initial conversation a great deal of important information is gathered that helps shape the recovery program to meet your loved one’s needs. The Delray staff works hard to ensure that each patient receives specialized care, rather than enrolling everyone in an ineffective, one-size-fits-all program.
  • Working Through Treatment. Once a medical assessment is completed and your loved one receives pertinent physical and mental health care, the other components of the program are added in. Detoxification takes place to help the alcoholic work through the process of eliminating alcohol from his or her system. This is followed with individual and group therapy sessions to help your loved one replace addiction-based behaviors with skills and choices to deal with stress in a more positive and healthy manner.
  • Life Long Support. Delray Recovery Center provides a variety of program components to support your new life in recovery. These programs prepare you for a life of sobriety but continued support is vital to remaining sober. The caring environment that helps an alcoholic leave addiction behind continues in Delray’s aftercare program. A combination of individual therapy, evening groups and recovery workshops help your loved one remain sober by strengthening coping skills and relationships. Although there is no cure for alcoholism, the aftercare program at Delray Recovery Center provides a supportive network that helps your loved one live a happy, productive life in sobriety.
