Cocaine Side Effects – Spotting an Abuser or Addict

Dealing with a Cocaine User

Cocaine Side Effects Spotting an Abuser or AddictIt can be extremely painful and frightening to realize that you or someone you love may have a problem with cocaine. One of the most worrisome parts of this is the not knowing: You may suspect that there is a problem, but you might not know exactly what cocaine side effects are, or how to spot a cocaine abuser or addict. Although the presence of the signs that you will read about below are not a guarantee that there is a cocaine problem, they are a very strong indication that cocaine abuse or addiction may be going on, and that it is time to speak to a professional about the situation.

Cocaine Abusers or Addicts may show any (or all) of the following behaviors:

  • Changes In Energy Level- Cocaine users may often appear to be hyperactive, at least for brief periods of time. The drug, when first used, will often give users a sudden burst of energy that will be somewhat uncontrolled. A cocaine user may fidget a lot and may appear unable to sit still. Additionally, this burst of energy often includes incessant talking, and the cocaine abuser may be talking faster and more loudly than usual as well.
  • Changes In Sleeping Patterns- Cocaine is a strong stimulant, and it will very often cause users to sleep less than they normally do. Some cocaine users may sleep only sporadically, or they may sleep only for a few hours a night once the addiction has taken hold of the body. Conversely, cocaine users who have been abusing cocaine for days or weeks at a time (binge usage) may simply “crash” as their body comes off the drug, causing them to sleep for many more hours than they would under any normal circumstances.
  • Changes In Appetite- Cocaine users will quite often have a decreased appetite. The drug frequently makes users feel completely uninterested in food, and it is not at all unusual for a cocaine user to go an entire day or even days without eating hardly any food. Over time, this can lead to the next sign: A dramatic weight loss may be one of the appearance changes that cocaine abusers or addicts will exhibit.
  • Changes In Appearance- Cocaine abusers or addicts may have some major changes in appearance such as major weight loss. Other appearance signs may include dark circles under the eyes or a pasty-skinned look due to lack of sleep. Some cocaine users may not take their usual care with their appearance, so they may look ungroomed or unkempt when compared with they way they appeared prior to cocaine use.
  • Dishonesty or Secretive Behaviors-A cocaine abuser or addict will generally take pains to hide their drug use from their loved ones. This may lead to dishonesty about where they are going, who they are spending time with, for example. A cocaine addict or abuser may be very resentful when questioned about these dishonest or secretive behaviors, even becoming very agitated if they feel that someone is doubting their word.
