Oxycontin Addiction Treatment
What is Oxycontin?
Oxycontin is just one of several semi-synthetic opiate pain killers on the market to treat moderate to severe chronic pain. While it helps millions treat their chronic pain on a routine basis, some do become addicted to the prescription drug and may not even be aware of their addiction. The active ingredient in Oxycontin is oxycodone, which is a derivative of one of the elements of morphine. For someone using it routinely for chronic pain, they can develop both a physical and psychological addiction to it.
Tolerance Levels
As one uses the drug, even as directed, they may develop a tolerance to it. When a person’s tolerance to opiates is developed, they need to increase the dosage level or begin taking the drug in shorter intervals for the drug to be efficacious in treating pain. This is extremely dangerous and can actually lead to an overdose of the medication. If you or someone you know has altered their dosage of Oxycontin or other painkillers in this manner, they may be developing a dependency or addiction to the medication.
Signs of Abuse
Another indication that one may be suffering from an Oxycontin addiction is that they will stop taking the drug and begin to experience moderate to severe withdrawal symptoms. This is another indication that the person may have developed a tolerance to the drug and may have increased the dosage levels. There are others that may have abused Oxycontin to achieve a high, and it is unlikely that they intended on becoming addicted, but it happens quite frequently with prescription pain medications. One may lie to obtain a prescription, forge a prescription, or even try to obtain multiple prescriptions from multiple sources. Even if one has not taken the aforementioned measures to obtain the drug yet, a very serious issue could still be in the making with the continued use of prescription pain killers and will only get worse as time goes by. An addiction to Oxycontin should be taken very seriously and can be very dangerous or even life threatening if not addressed quickly.
Treatment
Oxycontin Addiction Treatment should be sought as soon a possible. As one’s body becomes more tolerant to the drug, they may experience more intense withdrawal symptoms when going through the detoxification process. Another contributing factor to the severity of withdrawal symptoms will be the length of time the person has been using the drug. The length of time it takes for someone to fully detoxify will also be dependent on the quantity and history of use. There are more and more detoxification methods becoming available that may help to erase some of the withdrawal symptoms. Some symptoms, however, can last for weeks, months, or even years depending on the severity of the addiction, which is why it is extremely important to seek treatment immediately.
An Oxycontin Addiction Treatmentprogram should follow up the drug detox program. Some rehabilitation treatment centers may include a detoxification program, while others will require a person to be clean for a period of time prior to entry into a specific program. Therapy and support group participation is also generally recommended when combating an addiction. Upon completion of a rehabilitation program, one may choose to find living accommodations in a halfway house or sober living community which provides a clean and sober living environment for those who are in need of that level of support.
