Drug Addiction Treatment Program
The consequences of drug addiction are emotional, mental, and physical in nature but there are also consequences for the individual financially, legally, and socially when the addiction goes untreated. The problem has gotten so serious that there are now more than 11,000 drug addiction treatment program centers in the US today.
The key elements of addiction rehab programs
The human brain contains numerous circuits that trigger the reward system responsible for feelings of pleasure when a person uses drugs. Environmental factors, family histories, and genetic factors are contributing factors to the onset of addiction. Once a person’s addiction or dependency has become life-threatening, the individual usually has only two options – dying or entering a drug addiction rehab center.
Elements Involved in Addiction Treatment
Counseling and psychological support – this element is a key stage in every drug addiction treatment program that is currently available. Drug addiction typically involves some type of psychological issue that the addiction stems from or is seen as a contributing factor in the onset of the addiction. CBT or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is one of the most commonly used therapies and a supplement to coping skills, family therapy, and some form of motivational intervention.
Detox and withdrawal – there are two types of detox – medical and natural. However, they both take place a format assisted by medical and trained specialists in order to provide care to the individual while monitoring and supervising their progress during this stage. Eliminating the intense cravings that occur during detox by removing all substance toxins and any residues of them is the primary goal of this stage of the program.
Harm reduction – the basic theory behind harm reduction involves clinical monitoring and supervision of the individual so that:
- addicted individuals are no longer running the streets
- eliminate their cravings to use their drug of choice
- provide them with a legal and safe alternative to their drug of choice in order to block the brain’s neurotransmitters so that they are unable to achieve the desired euphoric effect they are used to
- stop the individual’s illegal drug use activity
In-patient programs – also referred to as residential rehab programs, the individual lives in the facility for the duration of the program. Depending on the depth and severity of their dependency on the substance they have been using, they could be in residency for as little as 3 or 4 weeks up to 4 months or longer.
Out-patient programs – the rehab alternative for those individuals who cannot afford the in-patient program or do not have sufficient insurance coverage to handle the costs involved. Out-patient programs are also ideal for individuals who are single parents, are studying or at a 40-hours job working full time.
