Admitting the is a Problem

When you have a loved one that is an addict, it is simpler at first to be in denial. It can be a scary step admitting that someone you love has an addiction. As the signs start to become clearer it can be harder to overlook all of the obvious signs that there is a problem.
Once drug abuse leads to drug dependence, where the person afflicted has an addiction to the drug and it is controlling their life, these danger signs can begin to appear:

  • As tolerance to the drug builds up it takes more and more to still feel the same affects. The safety of the addict can be in jeopardy as they take larger amounts of the drug over longer periods of time.
  • More time is spent trying to get drugs at the expense of giving up other activities.
  • The inability to give up drugs when they try to tackle it alone.
  • When faced with the reality that the drugs are harming relationships and causing the development of health problems, they still continue to use the drug.
  • If they do stop using the drug, they begin to feel sick or have withdrawals.

Abusing drugs can lead to the inability to meet home, work, or school duties. Being habitually late to work or school, driving or operating machines while under the influence of drugs or letting addiction cause problems in relationships are all signs that there is a problem. It is at this point that someone needs to get the courage to step in, take control of the situation and get the addict the treatment they need before it is too late.

Dependance on Drugs

Drug dependence does not stem from weakness or lack of willpower, it is a disease. It is a choice to start using a drug. Then as the drug is used more it causes the brain to begin to change. This change leads to craving the drug and can influence how you behave.

Abuse of Drugs

Many addictions start off innocent enough, because it isn’t just illegal substances that are abused. Prescription drugs and over the counter drugs can be what cause the addict to lose their way. Over six million people a year admit to taking prescription medication in a way that is not prescribed. It can start off with a legitimate injury where a doctor suggests the use of a prescription Opioid pain medication such as Loratabs. As the patient continues to take the medication it is possible that he will begin to enjoy the affect it has on his mental status, as well as the pain relieving affect it delivers. Then as they take more and build up a tolerance, they need more to get the same affect. This can lead to taking the medication in a way that it was not prescribed.

Prescription drugs abused:

  • Depressants such as Barbiturates, Benzodiazepines and sleep medicines which reduce anxiety and lower inhibitions.
  • Stimulants including Amphetamines and Methylphenidates like Ritalin are taken for feelings of exhilaration and increased energy.
  • Opioids and Morphine Derivatives are the most commonly abused prescription drug group. Codeine, Morphine and Fentanyl along with several other types are taken for their pain relief, euphoria, and sedation affect.

Over the counter drugs that are abused:

  • Dextromethorphan (DXM) found in cough syrup, is taken for the Euphoric state it causes
  • Nicotine in cigarettes is one of the most addictive drugs and is the easiest to get.
  • Alcohol is a depressant and is commonly abused for the relaxation, euphoria and lowered inhibitions it causes.

Illicit street drugs that are commonly abused.

  • Opioids such as Heroine.
  • Stimulants including Cocaine and Methamphetamine.
  • Dissociative drugs like Ketamine and PCP.
  • Hallucinogens
  • Other Compounds that include inhalants and club drugs.

Relapse prevention gives instructions on how to detect the behaviors and warning signs that can help to avoid the addict form having a relapse.
When looking for a treatment program it is imperative to find the right one. Treatment must fully encompass all needs whether mental, physical or spiritual.
