5 Facts About OxyContin You Need to Know

The Truth about Oxycontin

By now, most people have heard of the heavy duty pain killer known as Oxycontin and associate it with terminal illness or addiction, or both. While it is true that Oxycontin is prescribed to cancer patients and other people with severe, chronic pain that is usually related to terminal illness. Oxycontin has many other medical applications that contribute to its wide spread popularity and ultimately abuse. Oxycontin addiction, as well as the “high” it produces in people who bypass the pill’s time-release mechanism, is said to be more intense than heroin.

Here are five things that you might not know about oxycontin (not to be confused with oxycodone):

  1. The most common side effects resulting from Oxycontin use (not abuse) included anxiety, fatigue, memory less, headaches, and dizziness.
  2. Excessive or long term use, or immediate cessation without tapering brings about much more severe side effects. Withdrawal symptoms are said to be just as pronounced, if not more so than are brought on by heroin. Other severe symptoms include uncontrollable coughing and yawning, rashes, diarrhea, paranoia, stomach pain, apnea, hypo-tension, circulatory and cardiac arrest, and even death.
  3. In some cases, Oxycontin usage can cause impotence and enlargement of the prostate for men.
  4. Addiction and withdrawal are also side effects of Oxycontin use, and can even be passed down to children from mothers taking the drug.
  5. Oxycontin was created in Germany after Bayer stopped distributing heroin for pain management with the goal of finding a less addictive alternative.
