Who you should talk to if you are suffering from an addiction?

If you are suffering with alcohol or drug addiction or someone you love is, it is oftentimes difficult to know exactly what to do. If you are experiencing this, there are people you can talk to and who will listen to you. They can also recommend what to do next or the right steps for you to take. You will most likely want to discuss your issues with your family first and last as well as a physician and a therapist.

Talk To Your Family About Substance AbuseTalk to your family first – if you haven’t already done so, open up to your family and let them know you have a problem with alcohol and/or drugs. In most cases, your family will already be aware that something is going on with you because your behavior, habits, and mannerisms are bound to change once the addiction takes over and starts controlling you. They may be able to make some recommendations as far as an alcohol or drug rehab goes. You will want to discuss matters with them again once you have talked to the following and made your decision as to the program you are planning on entering.

Talk to your physician – if you have attempted to quit and you experienced withdrawal symptoms, your physician can administer a series of tests and then advise you as to whether or not you should undergo detoxification in an addiction treatment and recovery center in addition to psychological counseling and therapy. They can also help you determine the type of program you should enter (e.g. in-patient, out-patient, etc.).

Talk To Your Therapist About Drug And Alcohol AbuseTalk to a therapist – if you do not see a psychologist on a regular basis, you should consider finding one and discussing your abuse, addiction, or dependency issues with them. They can help you dig through your current situation and possibly uncover what is at the root of your problem with alcohol or drugs. There may be a co-occurring behavioral or mental disorder present that you are unaware of. Your therapist may also be able to suggest the right drug rehab program for you to enter.
